About the PNG to DXF Converter

DXF is the interchange format most CNC, CAD and cutting software reads — routers, plasma and waterjet tables, engravers, and drawing packages all accept it. This tool traces a PNG or JPG into closed vector outlines and writes them as DXF polylines, sized in real millimetres so your artwork arrives at the dimensions you intend. Convert a single image or a whole batch, download individually or as a ZIP. The black/white threshold each image is traced at is worked out from that image's own histogram, so a mixed batch converts consistently without anyone having to pick a number. Everything runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded and there's no limit on how much you convert. The same tracer also outputs PLT (for cutting and engraving machines) and SVG (for web and design) if you need a different format.

Things to know

Tracing works from shapes and edges, not photos

Logos, text, line art and symbols vectorise cleanly because they have clear boundaries. A photograph is continuous tone with no clean edges to follow, so it traces into noise — this tool is for the high-contrast artwork you actually cut, engrave or machine.

The ink/background split is worked out for you

Every pixel darker than a black/white threshold is traced; lighter pixels are dropped. That threshold is computed from each image's own histogram, so every file in a batch gets the split that suits it rather than one shared guess. The preview shows exactly what will be traced, and an Advanced control lets you set the value by hand for an unusual source.

The DXF is closed polylines, not solid fills

Each shape becomes a closed polyline outline — vector geometry, not a filled region and not a recreation of an original vector file. Your CAM software applies its own toolpaths, hatching or cut from those outlines.

Axis-aligned shapes keep their geometry — check before cutting

The tracer follows the exact pixel boundary, so straight edges stay straight and square shapes keep their proportions; this was verified against a real reference file. Even so, open the DXF in your software and cut a test on scrap before committing real material, to confirm dimensions and that fine detail survived the trace.

Output is in real millimetres

The DXF sets its units to millimetres and scales the longest side to the value you choose (default 100 mm), preserving aspect ratio exactly. Your CAD/CAM software reads the real size on import.
