There are two VAT questions, and they are easy to mix up. Adding VAT takes a price before tax and works out the total to charge. Removing VAT — the reverse calculation — takes a price that already includes tax and finds the original net amount, which is what you need when you only have the till-receipt total and have to record the tax portion. This calculator does both, for whichever country's rate applies to you.

How to use VAT Calculator

  1. 1

Enter the amount you are working from.

  2. 2

Choose 'Add VAT' if your figure is before tax, or 'Remove VAT' if your figure already includes it.

  3. 3

Select your country or type a custom rate. The calculator shows the net, the VAT portion and the gross so you can see all three at once.

  4. 4

Need local rules and worked examples? Open the dedicated country page — South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, UAE, India, Indonesia or Zimbabwe — from the links on this page.

Things to know

Removing VAT is not just subtracting the rate

To strip 15% VAT from a gross price you divide by 1.15, you do not subtract 15%. Subtracting the percentage overstates the tax: on R115, dividing gives R100 net and R15 VAT, whereas subtracting 15% would wrongly give R97.75. The reverse calculation is exactly where people make mistakes by hand.

VAT and GST are the same idea under different names

India and Australia call it GST; most of Europe and Africa call it VAT. Mechanically both are consumption taxes added along the supply chain. If your country uses GST, the GST option here behaves identically to VAT.

Rates and special cases vary by country

The headline rate is only part of the story — many countries zero-rate basic foods or exempt certain services entirely. For anything you are filing, use the country-specific page, which covers the local rate, registration thresholds and what is excluded.
