Open almost any design template, website mockup, or print layout in progress and you'll see the same nonsensical Latin: "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…" It is the most famous placeholder text in the world, used by designers and developers everywhere. But what is it, where did it come from, and when should you use it?
Lorem ipsum is scrambled, meaningless text used as a placeholder in design and publishing. It looks like natural language — it has the rhythm, word lengths, and visual texture of real prose — but it carries no meaning, so nobody is tempted to actually read it.
That last point is the whole reason it exists. When you put real, readable text in a draft layout, people read it and comment on the words instead of the design. Placeholder text keeps everyone focused on what a draft is actually testing: typography, spacing, hierarchy, and overall visual balance.
Despite looking like gibberish, lorem ipsum is not random. It is derived from a real work of classical literature: "De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" ("On the Ends of Good and Evil"), a treatise on ethics written by the Roman statesman and philosopher Cicero in 45 BC.
The standard passage comes from section 1.10.32, which begins "Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet…" ("Nor is there anyone who loves pain itself because it is pain…"). The familiar "Lorem ipsum" opening is a corrupted fragment of "dolorem ipsum" with the "do" of "dolorem" removed.
How did a 2,000-year-old philosophy text become standard placeholder text? The most widely accepted account credits an unknown printer in the 1500s who scrambled a galley of type to make a specimen book — a sample of typefaces. The scrambled Cicero survived for centuries in the printing trade.
Its modern ubiquity is often attributed to Letraset, which in the 1960s and 1970s sold dry-transfer lettering sheets featuring lorem ipsum passages. When desktop publishing arrived, applications like Aldus PageMaker included lorem ipsum, cementing it as the digital default. The text was popularised online in part by the work of Marshall McLuhan-era typographers who needed consistent dummy copy.
There are concrete, practical reasons lorem ipsum has endured:
Lorem ipsum is a drafting tool, not a finishing tool. There are important moments to switch to real (or realistic) content:
Over the years, themed "ipsum" generators have appeared for fun and variety: Hipster Ipsum (artisanal, kale, fixie), Bacon Ipsum (meat-themed), Corporate Ipsum (synergy, leverage, paradigm), and Cupcake Ipsum, among many others. These are entertaining for informal projects, but classic Latin lorem ipsum remains the professional standard because its neutral, meaningless quality is exactly the point.
Does lorem ipsum mean anything?
Not as presented — it is deliberately scrambled. The individual words are real Latin derived from Cicero, but the order is jumbled so it carries no coherent meaning.
Is it safe to use in commercial projects?
Yes. Lorem ipsum is in the public domain and used universally across the design industry. There are no licensing restrictions.
